What to include on a handyman invoice

  • The job address and date
  • Labor hours and your hourly rate
  • Parts and materials, with what each cost the client
  • A trip or service-call charge, if you have one
  • Any work guarantee you offer
  • Payment due on completion, and the ways you accept it

Tips for handymen

Get paid at the door

Small jobs should be due on receipt. Hand over or text the invoice before you leave.

Describe the fix

“Replaced kitchen faucet” is more useful to the homeowner than “plumbing.”

Offer a guarantee

A 30- or 90-day workmanship guarantee builds trust and repeat calls.

Questions

Should handymen charge a trip fee?

Many do, especially for short jobs or long drives. Put it on its own line so the customer sees it, and mention it when they book.

How do I bill parts I bought for a job?

List each part or a parts total as its own line. Some handymen add a small markup for the time spent sourcing; say so if you do.

Do I need a license to invoice handyman work?

Many states let handymen do small jobs without a contractor's license, up to a dollar limit. Above that, or for electrical and plumbing work, a license may be required. Check your state.
