Tips for freelancers
Invoice the day you deliver
The longer you wait, the longer you wait to get paid. Send the invoice with the final files.
Bill extras as their own lines
Extra revision rounds or rush fees belong on separate lines so the client sees exactly what changed.
Agree on terms up front
Put your payment terms in the contract or first email, then repeat them on every invoice.
Questions
Do freelancers need to charge sales tax?
Most freelance services in the US aren't subject to sales tax, but some states tax certain digital or creative services. Check your state's rules; if you don't charge tax, leave it off.
Can I add a late fee to my invoice?
Yes, if you told the client about it in advance. A common approach is a monthly percentage on overdue balances. Some states cap late fees, so check yours before you set a rate.
Should I bill by the hour or by the project?
Either works on this template. Use hours as the quantity for hourly work, or a quantity of 1 with the project fee as the rate.
